The Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS) is a five-day training course that is designed for project managers, supervisors and site managers to obtain the skills, tools and knowledge to create a safe working environment in construction.

Construction roles that could benefit from SMSTS courses

Usually, project managers, site managers and supervisors are the most common professionals that apply for an SMSTS course; however, anyone can apply if they are looking to further their knowledge and skills in health and safety, and environmental issues on a construction site. After completing the SMSTS course, you will be given a certificate which will be valid for 5 years.

In line with the Health and Safety at Work Act, the SMSTS course covers the following areas:

  • Construction Design and Management (CDM) Regulations
  • Risk assessments/method statements
  • Recent changes in accepted working practices
  • Behavioural safety
  • Management of occupational health
  • Electricity
  • Excavations
  • Working at height
  • Scaffolding

The United Kingdom Contractors Group (UKCG) recognizes SMSTS courses as meeting all the necessary standards for all construction workers on site. It is globally recognized as one of the leading health & safety qualification for managers, supervisors, foremen, and project Managers.

What does an SMSTS course offer?

As the level of risk associated with operating on construction sites is growing, the need to implement better control becomes more important. The SMSTS course covers all the UK legislation surrounding safe working in construction environments. The implementation of SMSTS courses in the construction industry creates a health and safety culture within the workforce. This course is endorsed by Build UK as the standard training for all construction managers.

By the end of the SMSTS course, you will be able to:

  • Implement the latest health, safety and environmental legislation
  • implement new guidance and industry best practice
  • fulfil your duties and responsibilities with regards to health, safety, welfare and the environment

What is the criteria to apply for an SMSTS course?

Now is the perfect time to apply for an SMSTS course. However, to become eligible, you must understand what sort of construction role you are looking to get into. The SMSTS course will be a great addition to your NVQ qualification, or if you are currently enrolled in a school or college, it would also be highly useful. Unlike CSCS cards and NVQ qualification, there is no concrete requirement to apply for this course. Most importantly the person needs to be a civil engineer.
