Skills needed to be successful in Supervision

Site supervisory is one of the most important roles on any construction project, with their main role being to maintain the health and safety of all workers on-site. Supervisors require a Gold CSCS card to prove to construction managers that they are skilled to work in their role. This blog will be focusing on the skills necessary to be successful as a Supervisor, including having great communication, organisation skills and being able to manage multiple projects.

Skill 1 – Excellent Communication

Communication is one of the main skills needed for a Supervisor due to the amount of workers you will be managing. There are dozens of workers under a Supervisor on a construction site, ranging from basic labourers to contractors. Therefore, the ability to communicate at a high level, both verbally and written, can greatly help in reducing the time to complete a construction project.

Skill 2 – Highly Organised

Organisation skills are also vital when it comes to being successful in Supervisory. Daily tasks include maintaining a safe, secure and healthy work environment, monitoring project expenditures and accomplishing human resource objectives (selecting, orienting, and training employees). Managing all these responsibilities equally requires a highly organised individual, who can properly allocate tasks depending on the deadline date and importance.

Skill 3 – Ability to manage multiple projects with urgent deadlines

Similar to the second skill, being able to manage multiple projects that have specific deadlines is an invaluable skill to possess. A construction project is never a linear process, with multiple stages occurring at the same time in order to achieve maximum efficiency and save costs, so leading multiple aspects of a project will separate you from other ‘ordinary’ Supervisors.

Summary

These are just a few of the particular skills needed to be a successful Supervisor, but transferable construction skills are just as important such as attention to detail, problem-solving skills and time management.
