What is a CPCS card?

The Construction Plant Competence Scheme (CPCS) Card is a skill card for those who work in the construction sector and within its allied industries. In construction, it’s mainly for those who operate and work with plant machinery. It’s a form of showing proof of competency in their chosen role.

The Construction Plant Competence Scheme (CPCS) was launched in 2003 and is owned by the NOCN Group. Since its inception, over 300,000 CPCS cards have been issued across 60 categories of plant and related occupations. Its key purpose is to provide the construction industry reassurance that only competent construction professionals are able to become CPCS Cardholders due to the need to pass formal tests and assessments.

When is a CPCS card needed?

The CPCS card is widely accepted across all UK construction sites. In most instances, it is the only card to be accepted to allow you to work at and in a UK construction site.

Why is the CPCS card important?

There are over 200 test sites across the UK which deliver theory and practical tests which helps to ensure industry standards in construction remain high. Being awarded a CPCS card is stemmed from successfully passing relevant tests and assessments. CPCS Cardholders also have access to free online support materials to encourage ongoing lifelong learning and continuing professional development. CPCS Card holders are thereby less likely to be deemed as incompetent in their roles. Hence the appeal of having a valid CPCS card when working onsite at a construction site.

Support for CPCS cards

Key industry bodies that are relevant to construction support the CPCS management committee and the rollout of CPCS Card within the industry. Such examples include Build UK, MP Awards, CECA, NFDC, HBF, Unite the Union, Construction Plant Hire Association and SPOA.
