Skills needed for a successful career in Bricklaying

Bricklaying has been a trade that is thousands of years old and is still essential in modern construction. Due to their durability and weather resistance, brick houses are 13% more energy efficient than those built with other materials, there is no surprise why this has been such a popular component in construction projects. With masonry being a crucial aspect of the construction industry, a career as a Bricklayer can be fulfilling if you possess the necessary skills. These include being able to mix mortar, the ability to work well in a team and technical proficiency. This blog will highlight some of the skills needed for a successful career in Bricklaying.

Ability to work well with others

Teamwork is a fundamental skill to have in construction as on most projects, you will be working with other workers in order to complete a project. Being a Bricklayer will also require you to work well on your own as a lot of Bricklayer’s are self-employed. Having a level of self-motivation is key when working on your own in order to stay focused to meet deadlines.

Mixing mortar

Mortar is a combination of cement and sand used as the binding material that hold bricks together. Mixing this material, whether manually or with a mechanical mixer, is a key part of being a successful Bricklayer as this will be a major part of your work throughout your career. Applying and removing mortar is also a daily task that is needed to be a success in Bricklaying.

Technical proficiency

Bricklaying requires working in accordance with construction software and designs in order to accurately execute the desired project, so having the technical proficiency to correctly read these designs is a crucial skill.

Health & Safety awareness

Arguably the most important skill is awareness of the health and safety protocols when working on-site. No matter the trade in construction, safety is the highest priority, so as a Bricklayer it is a needed skill to know the health & safety rules of conduct. Keeping yourself and the colleagues around you safe is just as important as the project itself!
